About Vulcan Materials Company

Vulcan Materials Company is the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates – primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel– and a major producer of aggregate-based construction materials including asphalt and ready-mixed concrete. It is also a company named to Fortune Magazine’s Most Admired Companies six times.

As part of a corporate initiative that embraced lean management, Vulcan entered into a multi-year commitment to replace its legacy systems. The company also consolidated from eight divisions to four regions — and moved from decentralized back-office operations to a shared services model.

Transitioning to the centralized, shared services structure raised a number of issues, as some of the procedures that operated well previously in a decentralized format did not work as well once the organization was centralized. The result of those decisions led Vulcan’s management to look more deeply into its business processes— and specifically the gaps between its systems. Forms and workflow automation offered the initial key to Vulcan’s needs. Integration with its ERP and other core systems led the company to a deeper dive – and into business process management (BPM.)

After completing its initial research and reviewing vendors with Gartner, the Systems and Programming team interviewed 14 vendors, short-listed five and sent an RFI. The decision process was rigorous. Vulcan wanted to not only automate forms and workflows, but also understand what was happening within the processes themselves, where bottlenecks occurred, how to distribute work across people etc.

The decision to select Process Director was IT-driven – and justified by the business. The ability to use both the traditional workflow approach and BP Logix Process Timeline, and access information via mobile devices, has given Vulcan the flexibility the company needs.
